ST LOUIS BIRDATHON 20201: BIRDING BY THE MONTH

ST LOUIS BIRDATHON 2025: BIRDING BY THE MONTH

Another option for participating, which might be the most fun for you, is to try monitoring a site for the entire month of May and see how many species you can record. This could be your back yard, however small; your larger property, if you live on some larger acreage; or a local park or other area of your choice. At maximum, it could even be the entire St. Louis area; one person last year found 193 species this way.

IMPORTANT: Please invite your friends, neighbors, relatives, and colleagues to pledge whatever they can, in one of two ways: (1) They can pledge per species you record. To be fair, you should give them some idea of the number you expect. (2) They can pledge a set amount for your efforts.

If you are a team leader or you are doing the Big Day by yourself, use the process below to report your results. The most important point is that we need to see your total species list for the day, not a series of separate site lists.

IF YOU ARE USING EBIRD

eBird now has a process for producing a “trip report.” This consolidates multiple lists for a group effort for an entire day. This will be the simplest way to report Big Day results for the Birdathon. Follow instructions in eBird for producing this, and then send a link to the report to bill@stlouisaudubon.org. This process is strongly recommended.

IF YOU DO NOT USE EBIRD (or do not wish to produce a Trip Report)

Record your total list of species on the St. Louis Bird Checklist, which you can download and print here. This can be carried with you and birds checked off as you go. No numbers needed, only check marks.

  1. Please do not send us eBird links unless you are producing a Trip Report as above.
  2. Put the dateyour starting and stopping times, the total number of species, the names of all team members, and (optional) the main locations you covered at the top of the first page of the Checklist, or on a cover sheet, and submit to St. Louis Audubon by noon on Friday, June 6, or earlier if you can.
  3. Please submit by scanning the checklist (preferably as a pdf) and emailing them to birdathon@stlouisaudubon.org.
  4. Or, type out a document with the species list and other information and email that, or mail a hard copy to Birdathon, St. Louis Audubon Society, P.O. Box 220227, St. Louis, MO 63122.
  5. If you have questions or difficulties, contact Bill Rowe, bill@stlouisaudubon.org.

Together, we can make a difference for St. Louis’s native birds!
