For the 4th year in a row a red-phase Eastern Screech Owl has returned to my Ferguson, Missouri yard. They have nested successfully 2 of the years prior, not sure if there are any young in the box yet this year. Regardless, here it is soaking up the afternoon sun on a beautiful March 2006 day! In March, 2005

I was near a pond in Forest Park , late May, at around 6 PM, when I came across a birders' bonanza.  Within 10 or twenty yards of each other I found a beautiful cedar waxwing, a delightful eastern kingbird, and a curious brown bird that was jumping from lily pad to lily pad. I had never seen anything like it.  After much scrutiny, I decided it was a female redwing blackbird.  This picture shows her leaping from one lily pad, note the water ripples, to the next one.

I don't know how commonly kingbirds and cedar waxwings are seen in the area, as I am just starting to redevelop my birding interests. I have included a photo of them in case they are of interest.  Has anyone else seen a bird jumping on lily pads-I was amazed by it!

After hearing an American Crow scolding "something" in Creve Coeur, I decided I better check it out. It turned out to be 1 parent and two juvenile Great Horned Owls the Crow was after. Luckily, when I went back the next day with a camera the birds were still in the area.

What a wonderful time of year -- the trees are blooming and the birds are in love.

I am only a novice birder, but thought this might be of interest to you.  I was driving through Forest Park on February 15th about 10:00 a.m. and spotted an American Bald Eagle in the area just east of the Muny Opera.  I happened to have my camera and captured a pretty good shot

Saw-whet Owl

These northern owls winter in our area, but they are rare and extremely difficult to find. The best search strategy is to look for pellets or droppings under the cedars or pines in which they roost during the day. When I first saw this bird it was only about 14 inches from my face! It was almost scary! I felt a rush of adrenaline. I had to whisper at the top of my lungs to let my search partner know we had found it.
