Upcoming FREE Webinar – Bees in Your Backyard

The Ohio State Unversity’s Bee Lab will be presenting a free webinar on July 19th about native bees.  The Bee Lab has lots of information and recorded webinars online, where some topics are focused on honeybees and beekeeping, but there are plenty that focus on our native pollinators as well.

I met Denise Ellsworth, who is with the Ohio State Extension Department of Entomology, last year at a pollinator workshop sponsored by the Midwest Native Plant Society, the same event where I heard Heather Holm speak for the first time.

The upcoming FREE webinar, on Wednesday, July 19th will feature Olivia Messinger Carril, Author and Biologist, who co-authored the 2015 book, The Bees in Your Backyard.  If you haven’t had an opportunity to see this book and are interested, let me know, I have a copy. The photography is amazing and it is a great overall reference for native bees.  The book is a good companion reference to Heather Holm’s book, Bees: An Identification and Native Plant Forage Guide.

Ohio really has as lot going on in terms of natural resources! I’m just home from an event, Mothapalooza, an immersion weekend for me (the moth novice) where I learned techniques for finding caterpillars, mothing sheet setups, macro photography and even went on a field trip with Doug Tallamy. Watch for a future blog post about this experience.

Olivia Messinger Carril, Author and Biologist

Though less well known then the honey bee, the native bee species of North America are important pollinators in both natural and agricultural settings. Olivia will be introducing native bees; giving an overview of their life histories, discussing our state of knowledge on native bee populations, and describing the valuable role these insects play as pollinators in most functioning ecosystems.

OSU Bee Lab webinars are free, and registration is not required.

To join the webinar, follow the link below and LOG IN AS A GUEST at about 7:55 Central Time the day of the event: http://go.osu.edu/theOSUbuzz
I hope you can join us for the July webinar. If not, the recording will be archived and can be viewed at your convenience.
